R: Stay Beautiful (The Lost Place), series of nine oil paintings on paper
The title of this show, the Philosopher Walks, refers to the figure in these paintings that walks through a large imaginary landscape. These paintings employ simple forms of trees, bodies, mountains and water to hold space for the travelers through the paintings. The Philosopher is sometimes alone, sometimes with a friend, and sometimes with a child. She is also you, and you are a deep thinker, and I honor that in you.
The nine paintings on paper, titled Stay Beautiful, are done in response to an assignment I received during the pandemic from multidisciplinary artist Damon Locks. Damon works with incarcerated artists at Stateville Prison. During the pandemic, Damon participated in a project called the 51st (Free) State with artists at Stateville and gave them four assignments. He gave the same assignments to some artist friends in the area.
Locks teaches comics, so the assignments require using multiple panels and pages to tell a story. The assignments were originally assigned and created during 2020. If you would like to see the original ink drawings done during the pandemic for the four assignments, please reach out to me and I will share them with you. We can meet here at the gallery anytime.
Stay Beautiful, the nine framed paintings, is a 2022 response to Assignment #2, The Lost Place. I recommend doing these assignments, particularly assignment #1: Liberation as a conversation with oneself. You can access the assignments on the page where I catalog my original responses.
