Stevens | Digital Drawings | home These murals activated three grey elevator lobbies. The spaces are long and narrow, and the three recessed bays were perfect opportunities for art. This project was initiated by Daniel Mihalyo while he was SDOT artist in residence for one floor, 38, which houses the Director's Office. I simplified the production process to just large format mural prints of images from city collections, and thereby extended the budget to cover three floors of SDOT offices. I used collage and hand painting of the images to personalize the murals. These three floors join a series of artist designed lobbies in the SMT (from the 20s to the 30s). A great lunchtime tour is to ride the elevators in the SMT and see a lot of the city's great commissions and artworks! Thanks to Seattle photographer Dean Forbes for his view of the Ballard Bridge used in the center image for floor 39, which I found on his beautiful flickr site. |
